There is no kid (and grown up) who would not love rainbows - so is our little Bear!
This is seriously a 5 minute project to create your own rainbow at home.
A science project which can turn into an art project as well!
It was inspired by the Danish Icelandic Artist, Olafur Eliasson, who is one of the greatest working artists today. His installations often use elemental materials like light, water etc. He recently had a solo exhibition in the Kunsthaus Zürich, following the one in the Tate in London. Actually Tate Kids has created this science-art project and with the help of it, you can recreate a bit of Eliasson's magic!
All you need is a glass of water, a torch (eg. mobile phone), white paper and colouring pencil or paint or crayons.
Rainbow is born when the light bends on the water droplets and separated into colours.
Here is how to create your own:
- Place a glass of water on the edge of the table, so a little bit even hangs off the edge of the table. Best is to use a glass with very straight side and completely transparent.
Make sure that your Bear does not knock off the glass from the table whilst doing this project!
- Try to make the room fairly dark, so the colours of the rainbow are move vivid!
- Shine the light of the torch through the water and adjust the angle until you discover the rainbow on the ground. Better to use a phone holder, so no need to hold the torch or phone all the time. Also best when the light and the glass of water are steady, so the rainbow is not moving and waving.
- Find your rainbow and place a white paper under it.
Just spend time enjoying the beauty of what light can create!
You can make a photo of your own rainbow or your little Bear can start painting the rainbow immediately on the paper! Our Bear tried colouring pencils first, then markers and finally paint, so he ended up with three rainbows!
