In an earlier post I have written how little Bear practiced addition and subtraction by playing pretend shop with real coins. When we reached higher prices in the game, we needed a 10 Francs note. Little did we knew, that this will turn our math practice into a science project. First little Bear started to look at banknote with his magnifying glass and we started to explore more and more details.
Just spotted, that there were little silver lines, which - looking at them really closely - turned out to be letters and so called micro texts . With the magnifying glass we could even read them well. It turned out, that the 10 Franc note lists the longest tunnels and their length and displays the rail network. The 20 Franc note lists various astronomical objects and their distances from the earth and has a drawing representing the night light emission as seen from the space. The 50 Franc note shows the list of the highest mountains in Switzerland and features the Alps.
You can also explore together the beauty of the Swiss cross transparent window on the banknotes and all other little details, like the tactile elements on the edges of the notes for the visually impaired.
Of this is not cool enough, the SNB has developed a beautiful mobile app to promote the new banknotes, which were released in 2016. The app introduces the security elements and visualises the concepts behind the notes with augmented reality. These are beautiful, moving, 3D images. With the QR code below you can also access the app to explore more...
