Cardboard animals meet augmented reality

We described in an earlier post how we created our own craft papers, because we had none at home and had some big plans with craft papers and cardboard tubes. All the beatiful shades of colours and interesting patterns cut from old magazines proved to bring even more opportunities than any standard block coloured papers available from the stores.

We had some animals in mind to be created from cardboard tubes. Little Bear wanted to create a whole Zoo, but in two days we got to make six of them, so it was a fun, but time consuming task. Maybe do not promise a whole zoo to your child before you start! :o)

We had some ideas from Pinterest, but at the end little Bear decided which animals to start with. We just talked through which colours we were going to use, how to capture the typical features of the animals. We googled for pictures of the animals when we spotted this great new feature of Google, where you can see the animals in 3D, just searching by their names. Google has 20+ animals uploaded this way. You do not only see them them moving in 3D, but you can also see them entering your "home", your reality as well - for the greatest enjoyment of the kids.

Most of them are quite self explanatory how to make, the shark needed a bit work, so here are a few step by step pictures.

First we cut out two triangles on the two sides of one end of the tube. This created the jaw .of the shark. the top of the other end we cut a small opening for the fin, which was made of the first triangle we cut out. From white craftpaper we created the teeth. First folded the white paper into the tube, marked the line of the jaw and cut out the teeth, glued back to the cardboard tube.

Finally we covered the animal with blue craft paper, glued the eyes, the fin at the belly of the shark.. and tada!

This is how a 3D view of the shark looks like on Google and how little Bear is feeding a virtual hedgehog.
