Make a Bubble Valve

Bear's Mum

This is also a nice idea we learnt from KiwiCo.

It is especially interesting if your little Bear has ever thought through how is it possible, that when you inflate a ball, you can blow air into it to inflate, but the air does not come out afterwards through the whole.

This quick mini project helps to understand how valves can work.

All you need is a glass of water, a balloon, scissors and a straw.

First, cut a tiny whole at the tip of the balloon. Really small one, so you can push through the straw, but it is tight enough and not falling out easily.

Second step is that your little Bear puts the balloon into the water. Let them try blowing bubbles, then try to drink water.... Physics comes to life!

So, what's happening? Which one is easier?

When you blow bubbles, you push air through the balloon, opening it up. But when you try to drink, you suck up the balloon at the end of the straw, blocking the water.

If it is not working for the first time (like with us), the straw is too deep into the balloon and therefore not closing enough and can not fully block the air.

Blowing bubbles opens the valve

Trying to drink closes up the valve...
