The word mandala is derived from a Sanskrit word meaning “circle.” Mandalas are found in different cultures and contain special, even spiritual symbols.
In the western world mandalas are often used as an artwork or therapeutic tool, but what is common in all mandalas is a circular structure with radial symmetry, meaning that the design radiates out symmetrically from the centre. It is one of nature’s more wonderful and perfect combination and rhythm of forms and shapes.
Making Mandalas is often used as a tool to practice meditation, but for kids focusing all their attention on what they are doing is just natural anyway.
We started drawing the mandala by taking turns, which helped little Bear to sit down and start something new, but halfway he took the lead and finished it all alone, which is perfect. This time we used wax crayons, but you can use pens, pencils or even water colours.
It teaches patience, improves fine motor skills and just simply fun and beautiful.
